Coffee Processing Basics Review Module
Coffee Processing Basics is a mobile-friendly eLearning module designed to advance the professional development of tenured Baristas at a regional coffee roaster/retailer.
Audience: Baristas who have passed basic evaluations
Tools used: Rise 360

Overview:
Covid-19 pandemic-related challenges stalled this client’s in-person ‘Coffee Engagement’ activities, leaving café coworkers without coffee knowledge reinforcement opportunities. To increase coffee literacy among the client’s staff, I created an asynchronous eLearning module. The goal of the project is to help baristas develop a deeper understanding of the client’s coffee menu and the specific flavors imparted by coffee processing.
The group of learners are motivated to deepen their knowledge of the topic, but they do not currently have access to opportunities to engage with the content. In response to this characteristic, I employed a connectivist approach to the module. Using this approach, the module delivers technical content, connects learners to various outside sources of information (both web-based and people within the client’s organization), and presents opinions from trusted sources. These features will enrich their future growth in coffee knowledge.
Gap Analysis

Process:
Although the audience and client for this project are familiar to me, listing learner characteristics and available resources in the analysis phase was crucial to informing my choice of a connectivist approach to address the specific learning gap.
After fleshing out objectives and outlining content presentation, I created a storyboard. Storyboarding helps me envision what is possible given my chosen medium. In this case, I chose to work with Rise360. Mobile accessibility was crucial given the resources available to the target audience.

Besides to providing a wealth of industry-recognized resources, I included content from experienced coffee professionals that the audience of learners have real access to. I developed video clips of the organization’s key leaders in coffee education. These clips feature leaders describing different key methods in their own words. The informal feel of self-shot video content works to make the dense, technical content of the module feel approachable.
